'If I was to fully describe the details of my experience, it would take me another week. If I was to tell you what I obtained from it and all of the feelings running in me during my experience, it would take me even longer. But one thing I can ensure anyone who has ever wondered about the ASB program is, you have to truly want to learn more about the people around you who you might have gone unnoticed before, and have a desire to do something for them in order to fully understand who you are and where you are standing in this world. This is the only way you can take something from this program.'

The City

Winnipeg is the capital and largest city of Manitoba, an eastern prairie province, and is often called the "Gateway to the West." The city is located near the geographic centre of North America, at the convergence of the historic Red and Assiniboine Rivers. Winnipeg is a cultural centre, and the home of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. It boasts historic architecture, scenic waterways, a heritage river, numerous parks, and distinctive neighborhoods. Winnipeg has laid claim to the title of World's Longest Skating Rink, along the Red and Assiniboine rivers.

The Community

The city's economy is based on light manufacturing, government, insurance, and commercial services to the surrounding agricultural community. The city has a long experience with urban revitalization and poverty reduction efforts. Approximately 23% of its population lives under Statistics Canada's Low Income Cut-Off rate. In addition, the rate of child poverty is very high in Winnipeg; almost one in five Manitoba children live in poverty. Winnipeg Harvest is Canada's largest food bank, serving upwards of 40,000 people each month.
