I am more sure than ever before that whatever future career I choose, it has to involve helping people and making an important difference in their lives. This trip has made me more focused on my goal of becoming a doctor, and provided great motivation to keep studying hard. Learning at Western has mostly been in academic areas, but this trip has helped me learn more about myself, and the world.

The Country

Panama is the southernmost country of Central America. Situated on the isthmus connecting North and South America, it is bordered by Costa Rica to the northwest, Colombia to the southeast, the Caribbean Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. The capital is Panama City. The culture, customs, and language of the Panamanians are predominantly Caribbean and Spanish. Spanish is the official and dominant language. Despite Panama's status as an upper-middle income nation, it remains a country of stark contrasts. Perpetuated by dramatic educational disparities, 30% of Panama's population lives in poverty.

The Community

Changuinola is a city in the Bocas del Toro Province of Panama. Tourism and agriculture are major industries. Changuinola has numerous banana plantations, and Chiquita Brands International employs a large majority of the area's citizens. Health care is available, but facilities are limited.
