Youth Opportunities Unlimited is dedicated to unlocking the potential of youth by providing client centred services emphasizing skills improvement leading to increased employability and empowerment, offering a referral service to agencies serving youth, and developing, participating in and supporting community alliances to maximize opportunities for youth.

Goals:

• To provide students with an opportunity to work closely with at-risk youth as they re-integrate into the community through the intentional programs and services of Youth Opportunities Unlimited. Youth Opportunities Unlimited is a caring and active place where all youth are engaged in learning and creating opportunities to build their future.

Cost - $300 CAD

Trip cost covers:

• Transportation
• Meals
• Registration
• Social Activities
• ASB Conference Weekend
• Administrative fee (t-shirts, team leader contribution, journal)

ASB London participants will stay in their own rooms/homes.

Meals

• Residence Dining will be providing us with a Hot/Cold Breakfast each day
• Picnic-style lunches will be provided by Hospitality Service
• Some meals will be at a restaurant or other dining establishment for social activities and some dinners will be provided by Hospitality Services

Other Activities

Participating in ASB London not only gives you a great opportunity to serve in your local community, but it also provides a chance to explore some other areas of the city, such as Victoria Park and Boler Mountain. Tours of these prominent locations - and others - may be scheduled throughout your ASB experience, in addition to exciting group social activities!

The City

The London of today evolved from its original settlement in 1826 as the government seat for the vast London District which covered most of central Western Ontario. In 2008, with a population nearing the half million mark, it is the 15th largest city in Canada. As a result, London is a thriving city full of creativity, growth and opportunity. Located between Toronto and Detroit, London offers the best of living: friendly communities, good job opportunities, and of course world-class schools (Go Mustangs!).

The Community

London's regional economy is highly based on manufacturing, and the unemployment rate is slightly above the national level, but lower when compared to the provincial estimate. While our real estate market continues to grow, affordable housing remains an issue for many London and area residents. London has a higher proportion of residents below the low-income cut off (LICO) than many other Canadian cities, and one of the highest low-income rates in Ontario. London is home to a relatively large multicultural and multilingual population - almost 22% are foreign born residents. According to the 2008 Vital Signs Report, areas of concern include child poverty, homelessness, unemployment, and the environment.
