Leadership Opportunities

Leadership skills are an integral part of achieving personal and professional success. The activities and programs provided in residence will help you cultivate the skills that are highly sought by employers, including inspiring a vision, empowering others, and collaborating effectively. No matter where your path lies, when you learn to speak, act and think as a leader, you have an important head start in achieving your own personal goals.

Getting Started in September

Choose to run for election as a floor representative for your residents' council! You will attend weekly meetings and provide the voice for your floor about their needs and provide feedback on the kinds of activities the council is running. Join a council committee and share your talents. Whether it be AIDS Awareness, Make A Wish or Breast Cancer Awareness - follow your passion and help organize an event. Once you stand up and get involved in an event or two, soon others turn to you for support. Before you know it, you will be the University Students' Council president!

Some Residents' Council chair positions are chosen in the fall are selected in the fall. Don't wait to be asked - find out how you can take on a leadership position in residence. On your floor you can volunteer to organize the birthday committee, the floor social committee or assist your staff and sophs with organizing an event for your floor. Maybe you want to start smaller with shorter term commitments? Consider a service-learning project for a day, or a even for a term, where you can learn from helping out at a community-based organization in the city or on campus.

Residents' Council/Association Members

Get some great experience as a member of one of your residents' council/association. There are committees for social events, communications, programs, the residence yearbook, and more! It's a great way to get involved and to meet some amazing people along the way. Talk to your residence staff m ember about connecting with your residents' council. You'll be glad you did!

Residence Tour Guides

The Residence Tours program is an excellent way to get involved and show pride in both Western and your own residence! If you are energetic, love to meet people, and are enthusiastic about residence, this is the job for you! We offer competitive compensation, full training, and best of all, we work around your schedule!

Our Residence Tour Guides are rated as resourceful and friendly, and genuinely enjoy this rewarding experience. The position provides an opportunity to enhance your public speaking skills, and makes an excellent resume booster! This is your chance to be part of Western's most important recruitment effort!

If you are a student living in Delaware, Elgin, Essex, or Saugeen-Maitland Hall, you are eligible to apply for a Residence Tour Guide position. Unfortunately, we will not be offering regular tours in our other residences for the 2009-2010 academic year.

RezNet Support

RezNet - "It's about People, Not Computers."

Are you looking for a job with flexible hours, great pay, and a convenient on-campus location? RezNet provides a great leadership opportunity and real career experience -- now!

RezNet's support philosophy is "students helping students," which is why the RezNet team is composed of University students like you who have a desire to help others.

  • What leadership opportunities are available through RezNet?
    RezNet provides students with hands-on customer service and professional development opportunities. Whether you are interested in marketing and advertising, computer security initiatives, operations and scheduling, staff training and development, or team building, there are opportunities for you with our team!
  • What kind of technical experience do I need?
    We are primarily interested in students with proven customer service skills. We provide training for the technical skills needed to assist students. If you use a PC or a Mac computer at home, you already are equipped with some of the knowledge needed to troubleshoot technical issues!
  • Will RezNet provide training?
    At RezNet, we will teach you everything you need to know so that you can provide support to students. All staff must be able to participate in paid training during the last week of August. Soph, residents' council and residence staff positions all require conflicting time commitments that would normally preclude participation on the RezNet team.
  • How can I apply to be part of the RezNet team?
    Please fill out our online application form at reznet.uwo.ca/application_process.cfm. We hire in January for summer and fall staff, and recruit first-year students during the summer.

Looking Ahead to Next Year

Residence Staff

Residence staff members, comprising residence dons and residence advisors, are senior students who are employed by Housing and live on your floor to serve as a link between you and the University. Their number-one priority is to help make your Western experience the best it can be. Dons and RAs give advice, keep you informed, teach you the ropes, get you involved, but most importantly, they lend an ear or a shoulder when you really need one. If you are interested, you can apply to be a residence staff member for next year! Applications are available online in December.

Residence Staff Applications

Why not consider applying for a residence staff position for next year? It's a great way to learn important skills that today's employers are looking for, such as leadership development, mediation and team building. Applications are available online in December and the selection and interview process takes place in January. Our residence staff undergo an intensive two-week training period in August, prior to the arrival of the new students.

There are many residence staff positions available that last throughout the academic year, such as:

  • Residence Dons and Residence Advisors
    These are senior leaders on the floors of each residence who are well-trained to bring you the support you need. Whether it be a concern about academics, or a personal health or wellness question, your residence don or advisor can direct you to the support options available, or simply be a caring friend.
  • Academic Programmers
    Academic programmers (APs) are members of the residence staff who promote a living and learning environment within the residence system. APs are full-time students who are trained to bring you the support and assistance you need to be academically successful.
  • Assistant Program Coordinators
    These leadership positions involve developing and delivering social and sport programs and dry alternative programming in the residences. This is a great opportunity to hone your experience on bringing a programming idea to life!
  • Residence Orientation Coordinator
    The ROC works with the residence life management team to support head sophs in developing a well-organized orientation program for the first-year students in their buildings. The ROC also helps organize and deliver the training for head sophs, and supports them over the summer to book equipment, purchase merchandise, and submit budget proposals. A lot of work, and a lot of fun, the ROC positions is a challenging and rewarding student leadership experience.

Residence Staff Education and Development Conference

The residence staff education and development conference, which takes place during the last two weeks of August, comprises workshops and seminars focusing on the following areas:

  • Leadership Development

  • Assertiveness
  • Care for the Caregivers
  • Effective Team-building
  • Conflict Management
  • Mental Health and Coping Strategies
  • Diversity

  • Healthy Sexuality and Personal Safety

It's a comprehensive and intense program, but every year our staff says it's worth it! The enriched learning and the special friendships you make with other residence staff members are truly the most rewarding parts of the experience. Residence Sophs

Residence sophs are upper-year students who assist new residents with the transition to university life and provide mentoring support. They are your connection to orientation week activities and work hard throughout the year to help you feel a part of the residence community. If you are interested in becoming a soph, please visit the University Students' Council web site in December for application information.

Residents' Council/Association Members - Elected Positions

Residents' councils/associations play an important role in helping to create a positive and supportive atmosphere by representing the interests of residents and organizing a number of activities that help to enhance the residence life experience. They plan activities and programs, including intramural sports, formals, special outings and study groups, and organize social activities. Overall, they represent the needs of the residents to further enrich the residence life experience. These are elected positions that are filled in early spring.
