Leadership positions are available for students living off-campus!

Western's Housing Mediation Service offers 20 positions as Off-Campus Advisors (OCA) to students who would like to work in the off-campus community during the 2013-2014 academic year. Three Team Leader positions are also available for the following Sub-Committees: Newsletter, Community Outreach and Social & Administration.

OCA POSITION INFORMATION

Functions of the OCA

  • Provide information on issues, events and activities that affect the community (i.e. theft/security issues, rental information, etc.)
  • Develop opportunities for positive interaction amongst community members (helping neighbours get to know each other).
  • Respond to questions or requests for support that develop in the community.
  • Promote the use of helpful agencies and community resources.
  • Work with student groups to promote issues important to students living off-campus.

Duties of the OCA

  • Develop and distribute literature to members in the community as needed.
  • On-call one week out of every four and during special time periods.
  • Respond to emails requesting information and/or advice.
  • Attend staff meetings and events as required.
  • Attend training sessions as designated.
  • Conduct presentations to residence students moving off-campus.
  • Document activities throughout the academic term.
  • Encourage programs that help students integrate into the community.

Terms of Employment

  • August 29, 2013 to April 30, 2014
  • Salary: $1, 320.00 (8 payments of $165 each, includes $10/month cell phone allowance).
  • Should reside in (or close to) designated area.
  • Must attend all training programs and staff meetings. OCA staff training runs from August 29, 2013 to September 2, 2013.

TEAM LEADER POSITION INFORMATION

In addition to their OCA responsibilities, each Team Leader is responsible for their area and supervising several OCAs at a time.

Newsletter

  • Create both internal and external newsletters.
  • Create, implement and meet newsletter objectives and assign off-campus housing related/educational articles in a timely manner.

Social & Administration

  • Ensure all administrative aspects including emails and community contacts are dealt with in a timely manner.
  • Encourage team building through social events.

Community Outreach

  • Create community service opportunities for the OCA program.
  • Create and attend events with a focus on educating individuals about living off-campus.

Duties of the Team Leader

Newsletter

  • Plan and implement six community newsletters during the academic year. Relate article topics to student/resident concerns at particular times of the year.
  • Plan and implement six internal newsletters for the OCAs.

Social & Administration

  • Ensure meeting & administrative details (minutes, birthdays, giveaways, etc.) are handled during academic year.
  • Plan and promote social events that encourage team building.

Community Outreach

  • Develop community-wide events (off-campus housing awareness, community contests, presentations, etc) and ensure OCA commitments are met.
  • Develop community service opportunities for OCA’s to attend & provide on-going information on other initiatives.

Terms of Employment

  • August 28, 2013 to April 30, 2014
  • Salary: $1,820.00 (8 payments of $227.50 each, includes $10/month cell phone allowance).
  • Should reside in (or close to) designated area.
  • Must attend all training programs and staff meetings. OCA staff training runs from August 29, 2013 to September 2, 2013. In addition, Team Leaders must attend a special training day on August 28, 2013.
