We've had a great start to our academic year! Our new concepts, Fresh East, Bento Sushi - UCC, Booster Juice - WSRC, and Fire Roasted Coffee have gone beyond our expectations. Our Residence Dining menu program, with more international flavours and fresh cooking, has given us great student reviews. Our drive to sustainability, healthier menu choices and certainly our Farmers' Market and the first ever O-Week Food festival, has enhanced our culture and choices on campus.

We are diligently planning more changes for campus with the renovation of our eatery at Saugeen-Maitland scheduled for next summer as well as Delaware Hall, which is closed this year. Several new concepts are being considered for the Campus Eateries as well as some potential changes to our meal plan partner program. Our goal is to continue to improve our variety, going forward. Our Conference Services team has signed up some big groups for next summer which will impact all of our divisions. Our chefs are gaining great experience by being involved with new methods of cooking and have represented Western in California, Mexico and Niagara Falls, over the past few months. Our hotel properties are doing well and Great Hall Catering has been exceptionally busy.

I will be away for the next four weeks on a journey to Vietnam, on behalf of Western and WUSC (World University Service of Canada) to help assess the methods of teaching of hospitality services in Rach Gia, in the southwest corner of Vietnam, at a college with 3,000 students. Vietnam has exploded in tourism and the demand is high for college-educated students. This will certainly be a journey that will enhance my knowledge of food and culture from South Asia. I hope to find at least one golf course and plan to take at least 500 pictures of food, people and the history of the country.

Thank you all for your hard work and efforts, and for being the face of our Division. I have set up a blog which you can follow. Hen gap lai! Or... "see you when I get back".

PS The first 5 staff members who respond to Janet (jsmith@housing.uwo.ca) with an answer to the following, will win 2 tickets to our fabulous Festive Celebration on Saturday, Dec. 20th:
